Caught in their shifting moods and their ambivalent struggle with intimacy, the Torah can help teach Fours that rules of action call us beyond our emotional responses, that there are obligatory ways we are expected to treat others. Rather than yielding to despair, Fours can take heart from the archetype of redemptive love that is displayed through Israel’s redemption from Egypt.
